How to Divide Groups Fairly with the Fisher-Yates Shuffle

Whether you are a classroom teacher building balanced student project groups, a sports coach organizing scrimmage squads, or an engineering lead running a team-building icebreaker, our Random Team Generator ensures mathematically certified fairness.

1 Zero-Bias Fisher-Yates Shuffle

Unlike simple sorting tricks that suffer from algorithmic bias, the Fisher-Yates shuffle generates a true random permutation where each participant has an exact equal probability of landing in any team.

2 Round-Robin Remainder Dealing

When your roster count does not divide evenly into teams (e.g. 19 people into 4 teams), our engine deals members one by one like a deck of cards. The size difference between any two teams will never exceed 1 member.

3 One-Click Discord & Slack Sharing

Clicking Copy Teams creates pre-formatted Markdown text with team names, member numbers, and leader crowns, ready to paste straight into Zoom chat, Discord, Slack, or WhatsApp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about controls, features, accuracy, and local browser saving.

How does the Fisher-Yates shuffle ensure fair, unbiased team selection?
The Fisher-Yates (Knuth) algorithm produces an unbiased permutation where every single permutation of your participant roster has an identical mathematical probability ((1/N!)). Each participant has an equal chance of landing on any team, eliminating human bias and favoritism.
What is the difference between "Number of Teams" and "Members per Team"?
Selecting Number of Teams divides your total roster into an exact number of groups (e.g., divide 20 students into 4 teams of 5). Selecting Members per Team specifies the group size (e.g., create pairs of 2 for partner projects or 4-person breakout rooms). In both modes, round-robin dealing ensures the difference in size between any two teams is never more than 1 person.
How does the Random Team Leader (👑) assignment work?
When enabled, the generator randomly selects one member from each finalized team to serve as team captain, discussion leader, or spokesperson. The designated leader is highlighted with a gold crown badge at the top of their team roster.
Are my student, employee, or player rosters uploaded to your servers?
No, never. All shuffling, team generation, and roster storage execute 100% locally inside your web browser using JavaScript and HTML5 localStorage. No names or participant data are ever transmitted to or stored on any server.
Can I save multiple roster lists for different classes or projects?
Yes! You can save, name, and switch between multiple rosters (such as "Period 1 Biology", "Soccer Team", or "Dev Sprint Group") using our built-in Saved Rosters manager with zero logins required.
How can I paste or import my participant list?
You can paste names separated by line breaks (one name per line) or separated by commas. You can copy and paste directly from Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, CSV files, or plain text.
