How the Final Grade Formula Works

Most university and high school syllabi grade students on a weighted average system. Your final course grade is composed of your current coursework grade and your upcoming final exam grade, each proportional to their weight.

Required Exam Score = [ Desired Grade - (Current Grade × (100% - Exam Weight)) ] / Exam Weight

Step-by-Step Practical Example

Suppose you currently hold an 82% (B-) in Biology. You want to finish the class with an 88% (B+). Your professor states the final exam counts for 25% of the total grade:

Calculate the weight of existing work: 100% - 25% = 75% (0.75)
Multiply current grade by existing weight: 82 × 0.75 = 61.5 points
Subtract that from your desired final score: 88 - 61.5 = 26.5 points needed
Divide by the final exam weight: 26.5 / 0.25 = 106%
Conclusion: You need a 106% on the final exam (or bonus questions/curve) to achieve your target.
