Understanding Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

Grade Point Average (GPA) is the standard metric used by colleges, universities, and high schools across North America to measure academic achievement.

🎯 Unweighted GPA (4.0 Scale)

All classes are treated equally regardless of difficulty. An "A" in an introductory gym class counts the exact same 4.0 as an "A" in Advanced Placement Calculus BC.

🚀 Weighted GPA (5.0 Scale)

Accounts for course rigor. Honors courses receive a +0.5 boost (up to 4.5 for an A), while AP (Advanced Placement), IB (International Baccalaureate), and dual-enrollment college classes receive a +1.0 boost (up to 5.0).

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about controls, features, accuracy, and local browser saving.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA is measured on a standard scale from 0.0 to 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. A weighted GPA awards extra points for rigorous courses: typically +0.5 points for Honors classes (up to 4.5) and +1.0 point for Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses (up to 5.0).
How do credit hours affect my GPA calculation?
Courses with more credit hours have a larger mathematical impact on your GPA. A 4-credit calculus class with an A contributes 16 quality points (4 × 4.0), whereas a 1-credit lab with an A contributes 4 quality points (1 × 4.0).
How do I calculate cumulative GPA from previous semesters?
Switch to the Cumulative Mode tab in the calculator. Enter your prior cumulative GPA and the total credit hours you have completed before this semester. The calculator combines your historical points with your current semester courses to produce your new overall cumulative GPA.
Are my courses and grades automatically saved?
Yes! All courses, grades, credits, and course types are automatically saved to your browser's local storage. You can refresh the page, close the browser, and reopen it anytime without losing your courses.
